They provide a service that so many of us, especially the more vulnerable members of our society, rely on.

And they are a part of the fabric that holds our communities together.

No fewer than 63 branches are under threat in West Yorkshire, 22 of them in Leeds.

The axe is falling because bosses say 2,500 must be closed nationally to maintain a sustainable network.

Any post offices not saved in the next six weeks will see their doors closed for good.

It is no secret that the nation's network of post offices has been leaking money for some time.

But the Government is making a big mistake by closing them in their thousands to save cash.

The local post office has always been one of the most important focal points in our communities.

It is essential it remains that way, particularly at a time when Britain is crying out for ways to bring people together and restore a sense of community spirit.

That is not to say post offices can afford to stay as they are. They are losing too much money for that.

Yet thousands more branches could be lost if the Government agrees to award a contract to handle benefit and pension payments to a rival company.

Instead of stripping away services, ministers and Post Office bosses must strive to increase the range of services on offer at post offices in order to boost customer numbers.

Acknowledging that the days of the old post office are gone is not the same as accepting that post offices have no future.
We should be given more reasons to visit our local post offices, not fewer.

A strong and vibrant post office network is vital if we are to help stop our communities being fractured beyond repair.
