A BURGLAR crippled in a fall was soon back at work – shoplifting in his wheelchair.

Graham Adair was badly hurt after the drainpipe he was shinning down broke off a wall at Harehills Working Men's Club.

Police arrested him as he lay in agony in the car park with £13 cash and jewellery he had stolen from private quarters above the club on May 10, Leeds Crown Court heard.

Just over a month later, Adair, 29, of Brander Close, Gipton, was back in business adding to his previous 35 convictions for 72 offences dating back to 1994.

Prosecuting Richard Hebbert, said on June 15 Adair was spotted in TK Maxx in Leeds stashing perfume, child's sunglasses and hair straighteners, under the cush-ion he sat on in his wheelchair.

After being bailed he was caught in the same shop on August 11 stealing aftershave and in Boots on October 23 taking razor blades.

Richard Reed, for Adair, said: "He still has ongoing difficulties with his back and his legs. Further operations and investigations need to be carried out.

"Neither he, nor the prison service are equipped to deal with a period of incarceration for a man with his difficulties."

Recorder Stuart Brown QC handed Adair a 10-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months, a 12-month supervision order and ordered him to attend a substance related offending programme.

He told Brown that "wheelchair or not" he will do the 10 months in jail if he breaches the order.

He also disqualified Adair from driving for 12 months.

Before he was injured, Adair and a woman were seen at a Leeds Asda store last March 24 pushing a child in a pushchair.

He took a £30 telephone and put it in the chair's footwarmer underneath the child.

On April 22 last year Adair repeatedly rammed a police car on Garton Avenue in East End Park, knocking it out of action during a chase after he was caught behind the wheel of a stolen Vauxhall Astra he told police he paid £50 for.

And he burgled a market trader's house on Dial Street, Leeds, on May 7 taking a TV, more than £2,000 and car keys before driving off in the homeowner's Toyota.

Adair previously pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, three counts of shoplifting, one charge of aggravated vehicle taking, one count of reckless driving and handling stolen goods.
