Castleford: Fire breaks out Xscape

A fire broke out in a sauna at the Xscape leisure centre.
Crews from Pontefract, Castleford, Knottingley and Normanton were called to the blaze in the gym area of the centre at 8.45am on Saturday, January 30.

There was no one in the sauna but around 15 people who were exercising in the gym, along with around six Xscape staff, had to be evacuated from the building on Colorado Way, at Glasshoughton.

No-one was hurt.

The leisure complex remained closed to the public until around 12.15pm on Saturday.

A fire service spokesman said the building's sprinkler system had extinguished the fire but crews had to ensure it was fully out and carry out salvage work on property damaged by the fire and the water.

Investigations are under way to establish the cause of the fire.
