MUMS in Leeds will be able to find the best places to breastfeed their babies when a new guide is published later this year.
The 'You CAN Do It Here!' guide contains a list of breastfeeding-friendly establishments in Leeds and will be available in time for National Breastfeeding Awareness Week in May.
The campaign, run by the city's branch of the National Childbirth Trust and Leeds PCT, will start on March 1 and aims to identify restaurants, cafés, shops and other public places where mums are welcome to breastfeed.
The launch follows the experience of Cookridge mum Lindsay Cooper, who was asked to leave health club Esporta after breastfeeding in the café, as reported in the YEP last April.
At the launch, at Crossgates Shopping Centre, health workers from Leeds PCT will offer women advice on breastfeeding and distribute a list of breastfeeding-friendly venues in the LS14 and LS15 areas.
The campaign will start in Crossgates because Leeds NCT chairman Kathryn Holme and project leader Mandy Bray both live in the area, but over the coming months the mums will extend the campaign across the whole of Leeds.
Venues that sign up will be given a 'Breastfeeding Welcome' sticker to put in their windows, or alternatively, NCT members will award stickers to venues where they experience a breastfeeding-friendly environment.
Mrs Holme, who lives in Swarcliffe with her husband Ben and 14-month-old son Reuben, said: "Mothers who breastfeed are doing the very best for their baby and need to be encouraged to feed while they are out and about with their babies.
"The aim is to help mums feel more comfortable about breastfeeding in public. Some mums might want to have lunch with their friends but feel they have to get home by a certain time to feed their baby.
"The campaign is to help them feel more confident that they won't be asked to leave if they do choose to breastfeed. It's also to make society more aware of the benefits of breastfeeding, which is the most natural thing for a mum to do."
West Park Deli is one establishment that has already been awarded a sticker.
Morning manager Janet Florey said: "Many of our customers are young mums and it's really important that they're encouraged to breastfeed in a friendly environment."
