POLICE were today investigating whether a suspected car firebomb attack was by vigilantes targeting a former British National Party member.
A Peugeot ripped apart by an explosion on Eighth Avenue, Windy Bank estate in Liversedge, was parked near the home of Jonathan Senior.
He was on a list of 12,000 supposed members of the far right BNP, leaked on the internet this week.
West Yorkshire Police have said they are "considering the possibility" the blast was linked to anti-BNP activity.
Today Mr Senior told the YEP he did not believe the incident was linked to the publication of the list. The self-employed 26-year-old said he used to belong to the party but left in 2007.
He is on holiday in the south of England with his partner and two-year-old son and the car belonged to a neighbour.
Mr Senior was informed about the explosion by his partner's sister, who has been looking after the house while they are away.
He said: "I was pretty alarmed at first. But when I started thinking about it, I decided it must be a coincidence.
"We've got one car with us on holiday but I left another one outside my house. If someone wanted to get at me, why not set that on fire?"
Counter terrorist officers, whose brief includes investigating politically-motivated attacks, were drafted in following the blast on Thursday at 10.40pm.
Part of Eighth Avenue was cordoned off and the remains of the Peugeot removed for examination.
Eighth Avenue resident Andrew Purdy said: "The air was full of black smoke and the car was on fire.
Its roof had been ripped off and the windows had been blown out. The windscreen was on the road outside my house."
The leaked BNP list is said to include former police officers and members of the armed forces.
The BNP said the list was based on its 2007 membership records, although a number of non-party supporters have allegedly been added to it.
It includes 858 people from West Yorkshire, the second highest county total behind Lancashire with 861.
