THE SECOND phase of a major regeneration scheme could see 780 new apartments built at a derelict former British Gas site close to the new £165m Victoria Gate shopping complex in Leeds city centre.

Existing 12 storey derelict offices will be refurbished and extended to create a 182-bed boutique hotel complex to cater for increasing numbers of visitors drawn to Leeds by the First Direct Arena and Victoria Gate.

Second phase plans, which include 780 apartments in five new buildings ranging from 11 to 41 storeys, will go on display at a public exhibition at Leeds College of Music on Quarry Hill from 3.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday July 20.

Edwin Liu, of Heeton Holdings Ltd, which is leading the project, said: “This is a major new scheme for Leeds and it is important that people have the opportunity to contribute their views.
“We have chosen Leeds for our latest development because of its position at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse economy.

“Its strengths across the professional, digital and creative industries mean that there is a sustained demand a high quality urban neighbourhood in a city centre location.”

Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, said: “Earlier this year, Ernst and Young reported that Leeds City Region was a growing destination for foreign direct investment, noting an 87 per cent increase year on year, and that Leeds is now the third top destination in
England for investment. This announcement from Heeton Holdings highlights that private sector confidence remains buoyant in our City Region.”
