A KEEP fit fan systematically battered his arranged marriage wife to death, a murder trial heard.
Leeds Crown Court was told the immune system of 19-year-old Sabia Rani collapsed from habitual beatings and she died.
Shazad Khan, 25, who regularly worked out in the garage of the family home and was a keen sportsman, has denied murdering her.
Sim
on Myerson QC, prosecuting, alleged: "She died because of the extensive injuries inflicted on her by her husband. The injuries included bruising all over her body and her bodily system broke down."
Tests showed Sabia Rani also suffered a large number of rib fractures which contributed to her death early last year.
Khan was arrested after paramedics were called to Oakwood Grange, Roundhay, Leeds, where the couple lived with other members of Khan's family, and found the body in the bathroom.
Khan told police: "I don't believe this. I work hard. I have got three jobs. Look what's happened."
Mr Myerson claimed Khan told police a "string of lies" about the circumstances of his wife's death.
He added: "You will not hear from anyone who saw Shazad Khan beat her." But, said Mr Myerson, the evidence was Sabia sustained violent attacks in the week immediately before her death.
He said Sabia Rani only went out in the company of her husband or one of his family.
Her husband, the jury heard, had three jobs including one working for Leeds City Council and as a porter at St James's hospital.
Khan, who denies murder, told police he was not responsible for his wife's death and had never lost his temper with her.
The court heard the couple, who are first cousins, signed a marriage certificate in Pakistan on December 25, 2002, but didn't live together until she came to England three years later.
In January 2006 there was a wedding ceremony after which the couple were regarded as fully married.
Sabia Rani had been married five months when she was found dead.
