A businessman tried to frame his dead pal for a devastating high speed car crash, a court heard.
Haulage boss Barry Holmes, who had drink between four and six pints of lager, lost control of a Porsche 911 which left the road at 100mph, Leeds Crown Court heard. Passenger Richard Whitelock, of Skipton, was killed.
Holmes, who denies causing death by dangerous driving, repeatedly lied to police and nursing staff and tried to get witnesses to say Mr Whitelock was behind the wheel, said Andrew Dallas, prosecuting.
The court was told Mr Whitelock, 21, let Holmes drive his sportscar on a night out in July, 2006.
But Holmes, 33, from Addingham, near Ilkley, lost control of the vehicle on the A650 Drighlington bypass near Leeds, hitting two lampposts and then flipping over.
At the accident scene Holmes asked witnesses to say his pal was the driver and asked for chewing gum to mask his drinking, it was alleged.
In police interviews Holmes conjured up "phantom" cars that caused the crash, said Mr Dallas.
Holmes ultimately admitted perverting the course of justice after collision investigators gathered evidence.
Holmes told police under caution that another car had "dazzled" the pair and forced Mr Whitelock into the fatal skid.
