Hundreds of animals are being hosed, preened and pampered, and shiny panelled farming machinery is being carefully manoeuvred into prime position.

Today sees the 159th Great Yorkshire Show open for business at the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s 250-acre showground in Harrogate. Finishing touches were being applied yesterday ahead of the three-day countryside celebration.

A 100-year-old Ford tractor was wheeled into place to form part of a display co-ordinated by the West Yorkshire Vintage Tractor and Engine Club to celebrate Ford and Fordson Association’s centenary, while young models tried out some of the new looks they will be sporting at the event’s fashion show.

Show director Charles Mills said: “We are ready for action and looking forward to another great show.”
