A NEW souvenir guide to the City of York, containing 160 pages of photographs and information on its history – from its foundation by the Romans to the present day – was launched yesterday.
The city's tourism partnership Visit York described it as "a unique guide to a remarkable city"', complete with chapters on architecture, schools, its chocolate history, its bridges, attractions, churches, historic inns and ghosts.

The guide is primarily aimed at visitors to York to take away as a souvenir, as well as for the city's hotels to place in rooms to sell or give away.

Dame Judi Dench, a strong supporter of tourism in York, said in her introduction to the guide: "I was born in York and grew up there, so I have a great fondness for this remarkable city with its winding, cobbled streets and beautiful architecture.

"The city has evolved over the years, with the arrival of new and exciting attractions, a wealth of interesting shops and a vibrant café and evening culture. I will always be proud to call York my home."

The guide contains new images of York and its attractions as well as more than 170 illustrations and archive images.

Visit York's business development manager Sue Frumin said: "The souvenir guide to York is a comprehensive, quality publication with beautiful photography.

"We wanted to produce a guide that could illustrate York's fascinating history in a more contemporary way. We're delighted with the results."

The guide will be on sale in York's two visitor information centres, at attractions across the city and also at Borders bookshop.
