Hop on hop off: electric bikes launch at Leeds Globe Point

Thought to be the UK’s first all-electric public bike hire scheme, Beryl and Leeds City Council launched the service in 2023, revolutionising commuting across the city with hundreds of e-bikes available for hire by the hour at more than 50 locations.

Docking stations for 15 bikes are being provided at Globe Point, where they will be recharged using the building’s renewably sourced electricity. Showers and lockers are also available to the tenants based in the building to help support their green travel choices.

“In keeping with Globe Point’s strong environmental ethos, having electric bikes on site for hire provide an opportunity for travel by sustainable modes. Just a few minutes’ walk from Leeds City Station’s southern entrance, you can pop to work on the train and nip out to a meeting by bike,” explained Antonia Martin Wright, the director of commercial development at CEG, adding:

“Alongside the fitness classes we organise, the e-bikes also provide another opportunity for the hundreds of people working in the building stay fit and healthy, as well as doing their bit for the environment.”

Designed to BREEAM Excellent, Globe Point maximises natural daylight to deliver healthy, flexible workspaces and the tenants also benefit from great quality amenities on site, including business lounge, café and event space.

Home to Reed Smith, Gowling WLG, Specialist Computer Centres (SCC part of global Rigby Group), Jaywing and Robot Food, the all-electric low carbon building uses 27 per cent less energy consumption than an average building.

Its iconic design by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios makes it the first flat iron building to be built in Leeds since the design was conceived in the city in 1875.
