Restaurant Bar and Grill, City Square, Leeds
IN a continuing quest to put big restaurants to the test during the one-hour lunchtime we dropped into this dining hotspot.
Oliver is very familiar with RB&G but, despite being known as one of the most fashionable places to grab a daytime bite, we've never quite sampled their service within the constraints of a 60 minute visit.
But first off: the facts. Good: Restaurant Bar and Grill is stunning, very stylish with heaps of wow factor and super slick service. Bad: It's pricey and the food isn't always out of this world.
I went for the calves' liver which, despite having a disconcertingly black exterior was actually cooked perfectly, accompanied by new potatoes with delectable rosemary and garlic.
My dining partner had a salad made up of feta, fig and rockets leaves. Hearty but hardly the most complex dish.
And did they get it to us in good time? Yes they did. Despite a shaky start which saw us wait ten minutes to be asked for our order it was on our table within 25 minutes and we were out the door after 50 minutes – good work.
The price, however, was not so good. You can begin to justify paying almost 16 for calves' liver but almost 11 for a salad is more than a bit steep. In total our bill came to just over 36 for two mains and two drinks which is a lot more than you'll pay for the same food elsewhere.
The dilemma is yours to wrestle with – are you willing to pay the price for the surroundings and atmosphere or do you expect top cuisine for top prices? If it tips the balance then at least, Little Oliver can now confirm, RB&G is fast.
