Primo, West Point, Leeds

OPENED last year, Italian restaurant Primo made quite a few ripples when it arrived in Leeds.

Even though it was somewhat overwhelmed by the adjacent building site where Lumiere was currently supposed to be being erected, it held its own.

Unfortunately now that the concourse in front of the restaurant has been widened they've been forced, due to unexpected currents from the front door, to shift the entrance to the side. This is a little confusing.

Minor quibbles aside, our priority was checking out how quickly we could get in and out during our lunch hour.

They were at something of an advantage here since this being the last week before January pay day people aren't exactly flush and, as a result, there weren't many diners joining us.

That said we still got our meals pretty quickly (Little Oliver has been in equally quiet restaurants and still waited a long time for his nosh.)

I ordered the Ravioli Aragosta, which is lobster ravioli with mussels and rocket. It was absolutely divine and a dish I haven't seen, certainly not sampled, anywhere else. It was also superb value at less than a tenner.

My dining partner went for a pizza with red peppers since the vegetarian options weren't extensive, but at least there were options. At 7.85 this was also very reasonable, not least because it was a whopper.

As simple as it was, all our food was sumptuous and came at lightning speed. Plus, with a couple of drinks thrown in, the final bill with a tip was an excellent 25.

On the day that we visited Primo appeared to be suffering from the New Year blues that every business, particularly restaurants, seem to go through.

But it's undeserved since this restaurant is a great spot to grab lunch – contemporary, fast service and great food. Things aren't great for anyone at the moment but when they pick up Little Oliver hopes this place gets the trade it truly warrants.

It's a bit off the beaten track (and that side door isn't helping) but well worth seeking out.
