Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Greek Street, Leeds

As a big burger fan, Little Oliver was delighted when GBK opened a branch in Leeds and more than a year after their launch, it seems their popularity hasn't faded.

They may be bad for the waistline but they're good for the wallets, and with frequent 2-for-1 vouchers being handed out, it's no surprise the restaurant is still doing a roaring trade.

But GBK is not really about value for money – it's all about the burgers.

The restaurant is centred around the kitchen, so customers have to order at the bar, with very little emphasis placed on service, drinks or anything else. Clean and basic, this place pretty much does what it says on the tin.

One of the most impressive things is the menu, which varies from the bog-standard cheeseburger to the weird and wonderful Kiwiburger (containing a bizarre combination of beetroot, egg and pineapple).

There's also plenty of chicken, lamb and vegetarian options, as well as wild boar and buffalo burgers, while the menu offers very little in the form of starters and desserts (in fact, just milkshakes) because the burgers are so filling.

On this occasion, my dining partner chose the minted lamb burger (6.95), while I went for the garlic mayo burger (6.80). Being greedy, we also had a chocolate milkshake each (3.50), as well as sharing a portion of chips (2.70) with dips of blue cheese and sour cream/sweet chilli sauce (1.55 each).

The milkshakes kept us busy while we waited for the burgers – as it was fairly busy, we had to wait around 20 minutes.

The wait was definitely worth it. My dining partner's only complaint was about the raisins/sultanas in her relish, which she found quite weird, while my garlic mayo was so strong, it was virtually luminous green.

But it tasted fine and the chips and dips were delicious – once again, GBK did not let us down.

The restaurant is still a benchmark for burgers in Leeds but here's a word of advice for fellow devotees – make sure you go with a healthy appetite.
