Granary wharf is just one of the city’s major success stories when it comes to reinvention.

A huge swathe of the city centre’s recent renaissance has centred around the bustling waterfront.

In recent years dozens of new businesses have opened up their doors on the former granary which gives the wharf its name.

And Granary Wharf has become a firm favourite for young professionals and workers in the city’s Holbeck Urban Village.

The Pour House, which is just across the canal, is one of those to have reaped the rewards from the area’s rebirth.

The Pour House’s website claims it has modelled itself on the original supporting campaign prints of William Hogarth.

Hogarth believed that beer should be more accessible and consumed by all.

And in support of the campaign The Pour House even has its own separate “Gin Lane”.

Apparently Hogarth’s prints in the 1700’s were engineered to prevent the over consumption of cheap spirits, by the poor, especially gin.

My lunch companion and I decided to venture back to The Pour House to see what was on the menu on a sunny Saturday.

We were particularly impressed with the stunning building which was tastefully decorated - including small prints on the wall from the Grand Exhibition.

We decided to sit upstairs and were impressed with the beautiful beams in the roof as we glanced through the menu.

There were plenty of options to choose from such as a variety of sandwiches, steaks, barbecue ribs and nachos.

I settled for The Pour House’s signature dish which is the intriguing Hanging Derek.

These hanging skewers, which came with their own special stand, were available in a variety of different meat or veg options.

I decided to try the chicken which came on a skewer alongside pieces of vegetables including onion, courgette and peppers.

The dish, which looked fabulous, was accompanied with a side of coleslaw and a small dish of chips.

Each part of the skewer was perfectly cooked - but I just couldn’t help but feel as though there was something missing from the dish to boost the “wow” factor.

My dining partner was certainly more than satisfied with his hearty burger.

He opted for the South West Burger which came served with chilli peppers, bacon, onions and guacamole.

He said the huge burger was packed full of flavour and was up there with some of the best he had ever tasted.

At one point he was forced to pick up his knife and fork to help wade through the mammoth meal because of its sheer size.

The burger also came with a pot of coleslaw and a dish of chips too.

Overall our bill, which included a coke and a pint of Kaltenberg, tipped the scales at just over £27.

Although our meal was perfectly nice I still couldn’t shake off the feeling there was just a little something missing.
