Local Yorkshire faces to appear alongside celebrity chefs at BBC Good Food Show Winter

Almost a decade ago, farmer Jonathan Curtoys decided to stop cutting his hedgerows - to help nature - and in the process he stumbled upon a whole new business.

Next month, he is set to represent Yorkshire at a major national food fair.

The BBC Good Food Show Winter is returning to the NEC once again on 26 – 29 November, and bringing with it a host of famous faces and hundreds of exhibitors. Some of the nations’ favourite food stars including Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood, Michel Roux Jr, James Martin and The Hairy Bikers will be cooking live on stage on the 2,000 seater Supertheatre. Plus some of Yorkshire’s best local food companies will also appear at the Show in the popular Producers’ Village.

The Producers’ Village is one of the most unique attractions at the Show packed full of local and artisan speciality food makers. The area gives thousands of visitors the chance to meet exhibitors who pride themselves on the quality and provenance of their produce with the chance to sample and buy their wares.

Masons Yorkshire Gin is not just your run of the mill, off the shelf, generic gin. Recipe after recipe was rejected in the search for a gin they felt deserved to be called Masons Yorkshire gin, a gin they would choose to drink. They finally created a distinctly unique gin that that they are proud to call Masons Yorkshire Gin. Distilled in 200 litre batches, each bottle bears its own hand written batch and bottle number.

Owner Jonathan Curtoys, who founded the business around a decade ago, almost by chance, said: “It’s an event we always look forward to and we’re proud to represent Yorkshire. We have people come to see us every year, it’s a really good show.”

The business, which employs around 12 people, came about after Jonathan was trying to find new ways of making his small arable farm more sustainable.

“Our original idea to make more of the farm was to grow and create cereals. At that time we also decided to leave the hedgerows to grow rather than cutting them, to help wildlife and we ended up with all these sloes, it was just another crop for the farm but we decided to use them and 10 years later, here we are. We decided to concentrate on it full time in 2006.”

Raisthorpe Manor Fine Foods began as an accompaniment to Raisthorpe Flyers, providing homemade raspberry gin for guests at elevenses. The popularity of the drink grew and in 2008 the company was set up, creating homemade gins and liqueurs out of the farmhouse kitchen. The business continued to grow and with thanks to funding from RDPE via Yorkshire Forward they now operate from a brand new factory facility in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds.

SLOEmotion is a small fami

ly business based in the Howardian Hills to the north-east of York in the megalopolis that is Barton-le-Willows. They started back in 2002 on Manor Farm near Malton, where SLOEmotion was born, moving to bigger and better premises in 2007. Their Sloe Gin is made in the traditional way, with the fruit steeped in gin and sugar and left to mature. Like good home-made Sloe Gin SLOEmotion’s is a pale, almost rosé colour because nothing else is added.
