A humble beer in Leeds costs an average of £2.32, new research has found, making it the 28th ‘cheapest’ place to buy a bottle in Europe.

GoEuro, a comparison site for travel across Europe has launched its 2016 Beer Price Index which highlights the financial cost of travelling abroad.

Exposing the best and worst value destinations for travellers to visit from a list of 70 cities, the website looked at the cost of a beer in supermarkets, a local bar and the overall average price.

Within Leeds, travellers can expect to pay an average of £2.32 for a bottle of beer, researchers found.

A bottle of beer from supermarkets cost on average just 87p, while in a bar the city’s average is around £3.81 a bottle.

“On holiday, many of us will enjoy a beer at a local bar grateful for not being at work,” said Naren Shaam, CEO and founder of GoEuro.

“As a result, beer can be found almost everywhere in the world and it is a perfect commodity for us to use to gauge how cheap, or expensive, a city will be.”

Just in front of Leeds in 27th place is Edinburgh, where the average beer costs £2.28.
