Have your say

How do you feel about clinging to a wall nearly 50 feet up in the air?

To some it’s the height of adventure, to others it’s taking on fear itself. Either way, Harrogate Climbing Centre is a great place to hang out.

Housed in an old industrial building beside Harrogate College, the centre makes full use of the space, with the multi-coloured plastic hand holds reaching dizzying heights and angles.

As an instructor knots you into your harness, you might feel a twinge of fear but it’s hard to stay scared when children aged in the single digits happily fling themselves up the face.

It’s a great option for a family day out with a difference. While it may not do wonders for your ego being shown up by a child, it’s all part of the fun.

Newcomers can take a taster course, while veterans can get a refresher in climbing.

There are world cup standard ascents to test the hardiest of climbers; the sky’s the limit here, with options to gain qualifications at the highest level and even a commitment to support the acceptance of sport climbing as an Olympic event.

Harrogate has its own bouldering section, in which smaller walls are tackled without the benefits of ropes or harnesses and the safety feature is the padded floor.

Staff are good-humoured and patient and lead climbs, staying with you even when you are reluctant to let go to be let down.

Birthday parties are a particular favourite with visitors, keeping children and adults occupied.

If climbing has ever taken your fancy, this is a good option to get your first taste of the action. The sky really is the limit.
