Town does not deserve its reputation
ONCE again the town of Dewsbury finds itself in the glare of the national spotlight.
The appalling murder of 17-year-old Amar Aslam has put the town back under the microscope.
In the wake of the Shannon Matthews saga this tragic, senseless killing is the last thing the town needed.
Little wonder then that its MP, councillors and the public themselves are struggling to comprehend what has happened.
Their thoughts, and ours, are with Amar's family at this most difficult of times.
It is deeply unfortunate that Dewsbury continues to grab headlines for all the wrong reasons.
But the truth is that no village, town or city in Britain is immune to crime and serious violence.
Dewsbury certainly does not deserve the treatment meted out by certain sections of the national media.
Kicking the town when it is down is shameful and at times the coverage has resembled a witch-hunt.
We know Dewsbury is not the hellhole that it is being portrayed to the outside world.
The town's leaders, business community and the people themselves will work hard to recover from this latest incident.
And show the rest of Britain the strength, unity and resilience of this proud town.
Racy venture
LISTEN carefully – you might just hear Mary Whitehouse spinning in her grave.
Leeds is to stage its first-ever Erotica Festival, one of the biggest events of its kind ever held in the North of England.
The celebration of 'sexuality, sex and the human body' is sure to be controversial when it hits the city in October.
Highlights will include a stunning masquerade ball on Halloween night, followed by a burlesque and cabaret night.
Organisers promise it will be racy without being offensive.
Or, as the late Kenny Everett might put it, 'It'll all be in the best possible taste'.
Up for the cup
LOOKS like there is a big day in store at Headingley Carnegie tomorrow.
Leeds Rhinos go up against Wigan Warriors for a place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.
The Rhinos were given a timely boost this week with Kiwi star Brent Webb putting pen to paper on a new three-year deal.
Let's hope Webby and the rest of the boys in blue and amber can do the business.
We reckon the Rhinos have got what it takes to go all the way to the final...
And make up for Leeds United's disappointment by delivering the Wembley win we've been waiting for.
