Looking for gems on the Leeds skyline

IT'S funny how often you miss what's right in front of your nose – and that's never more true than when it comes to Leeds's architecture.

The city is full of grand designs and hidden gems dating back centuries, but we're often too preoccupied to notice them.

And while many bemoan a perceived absence of flair or imagination in today's cityscapes, you only have to glance at the shortlist for the Leeds Architecture Awards to know that there are still designs capable of taking the breath away.

However, while the experts are entitled to their opinion, the value of the architecture around us can only truly be measured by what it means to those who live with it day in and day out.

That is why the Yorkshire Evening Post is launching its own search for the city's best building – with you our readers filling the role of judges.

It could be anything from a church to an office block, but it's important to recognise the role our built environment plays in reflecting its location.

In Leeds, there are buildings such as the town hall which show the proud tradition of ambition and grandeur for which we have our civic forefathers to thank.

Then there is a building like Bridgewater Place which signals our city's intentions to move up a league.

So next time you're out why not take a few moments to lift your gaze from the street and appreciate the beauty and innovation around you.

You never know, it might just make you look at the city in a whole new light.

A fitting tribute

WELL done to the six bobbies from West Yorkshire campaigning for better care of memorials to their fallen colleagues.

They got on their bikes to visit the stones honouring three police officers from Yorkshire to have died in the line of duty – Sharon Beshenivsky, Ian Broadhurst and John Speed – before riding to London's national memorial.

Their aim was to draw attention to the poor state of many of the monuments, which are often left badly neglected.

We trust their efforts will now shame the authorities into action.

Queen and Duke

A YOUTHFUL Queen Elizabeth comes face to face with a jazz legend in a photograph that simply oozes 1950s glamour.

Where was it taken? Paris perhaps? How about New York? No, this magical moment was captured when our Queen met American band leader Duke Ellington during a two-day stay in Leeds in 1958.

Inspired by their meeting, Ellington went on to write an orchestral piece, The Queen's Suite, in her honour.

Isn't it wonderful to know that our city played a starring role in this remarkable meeting?
