Jane would have been proud of you
WHAT a truly memorable day for the city of Leeds.
The streets were brought to a standstill on Sunday by a human wave as 11,000 entrants lined up for the Leeds 10k Run For All.
It was a fantastic sight to behold and one that showed this great event is here to stay.
The brainchild of cancer heroine Jane Tomlinson, this was the first year the race had been run since she passed away last September.
It was a huge success with hundreds of thousands of pounds being raised for good causes across the region.
Jane's husband Mike did a wonderful job of organising the event, helped by children Suzanne, Rebecca and Steven.
It was a day to remember. Both for those who laced up their running shoes to take part and the crowds who lined the streets to cheer them on.
Well done to all those who ran, walked, or wheeled themselves round the 10 kilometre course.
Jane would have been so proud of you all.
Losing out
THE idea of seizing criminals' cash and pouring it back into police coffers is paying off.
More than 36 million was confiscated from crooks in the first three months of this year alone. So far, so good.
Yet it's hard not to raise an eyebrow when one hears how much West Yorkshire has been given from this pot.
Of course, a 133,245 windfall is not to be sniffed at.
But it pales beside the sums handed to other forces around the country.
West Yorkshire occupies a lowly 15th place in the table of who got what.
As a force operating in a region with two major cities, it is staggering to think West Yorkshire received a smaller share than the likes of Bristol.
The good news is police hope to keep upping how much cash they recover.
So let's see us get a fairer slice of the cake next time please.
Benefits battle
INJURED Iraq War veteran Adam Douglas has won his fight for benefits – but why did it take so long? And why should he have to scrap for the cash every year for the rest of his life?
The 41-year-old has to wear continence products day and night and struggles to walk with a stick after being blown up in Basra.
He finally won his battle for carer's benefit for wife Maria – only to be told he will have to do it all over again in 12 months' time.
Ministers should be ashamed.
Adam fought for his country in Iraq. He shouldn't have to face another fight here for something he should have by right.
