LIMITED OPPORTUNITIES: One million young people are out of work.

Rod McPhee: Lost generation

On virtually a daily basis we’re besieged by fresh reports on youth unemployment.

HEADSCARVES AT THE READY: The Land Girls on parade in Main Street during Haworths 1940s weekend.

Jayne Dawson: A lovely war

I love a bit of nostalgia, I do. I’m all for selecting the more attractive elements of the past and putting the grim bits to one side.

The Bloke: My sleep-deprived paranoid state

I have always secretly envied people who can operate on a limited amount of sleep.

NAME GAME: Victoria Beckham with son Brooklyn in 2000.

Debbie Leigh: Moniker, if it’s a girl...

With the arrival of another celebrity baby comes the obligatory weird and not so wonderful name.

BEGUILING: Liza Minelli in Cabaret.

Oliver Cross: Wilkommen, bienvenue Woodhouse

Woodhouse, Leeds, is in a bit of a flap at the moment, in preparation for the annual Woodhouse Festival, which, E&OE, will take place from June 24 to June 30.

QUICK STEP: Strictly Come Dancing.

Jayne Dawson: Speed living

We’re all about fast these days. Slow things get bad names thrown at them, like “snail mail” or “granny driving” as my son refers to my performance behind the wheel, but that’s another story.

Jayne Dawson: Thirst for cider from the far side of the world

Proof that it is always the little things that get you comes in the form of my sister, fresh to Leeds soil after a decade in New Zealand.

LIVING THE DREAM: The ideal, tidy kitchen.

Jayne Dawson: Kitchen drama

Ever tried emptying a kitchen? It’s a pig of a job.

Oliver Cross: Driven to distraction

Car insurance. Two words to make any sane person’s blood boil. It’s the annual rip-off we all have to endure in order to engage in what has become quite an irksome part of human existence: driving.

Rod McPhee: Give it a whirl

Under normal circumstances a £500,000 arts project being staged in Leeds which no-one knows much about would be something I’d be sticking the boot into – but in this case I’m trying to remain philosophical.

IN NEED OF IMPROVEMENT: Plans have been unveiled to transform the run-down lower end of Kirkgate in Leeds.

Rod McPhee: Eastern promise

It’s great to see Leeds City Council taking long-overdue steps to rejuvenate the urban blindspot that is Kirkgate, but they need to develop a clear vision for this eastern section of town – and they need to do it soon.

Rod McPhee: It’s beer v bars

The Campaign for Real Ale this week suggested the rising price of beer is forcing 12 pubs a week to close. Given the type of pub this is likely to affect I’d suggest a closure rate of 12 pubs a week is too slow.

Rod McPhee: My lap dancing position

Lap dancing: rather lurid, sleazy, enjoyed by lairy young lads and dirty old men. An industry which, ostensibly, may seem regulated but, behind the scenes, leads to all kinds of horrendous exploitation and the degradation of women.

Oliver Cross: Cape of good sense

As style editor of this column, I’ve decided that the next must-have fashion item is the bicycle cape.

UNEXPECTED: Coldstones Cut. PIC: Paul Harris/www.paulharrisphotography.com

Oliver Cross: The fertile landscape

Unless you’ve got an eye for unusual wildlife, the chances of seeing something surprising in the Yorkshire Dales are quite small.

The Bloke: I didn’t exercise my right to vote when given the chance

I’m ashamed to admit this, but for the first time in as long as I can remember I didn’t exercise my right to vote when given the chance.

The Bloke: Waking up to scenes reminiscent of the last sailing of Noah’s Ark

It’s Saturday night and I’m standing with three of my best mates in a strange bar in a small West Midlands town.
