Brasserie Blanc, Sovereign Street, Leeds
THIS, surely, must be the tastiest, best value lunch and dinner in Leeds. I'm serious.
Select something from Brasserie Blanc's 'dine with wine' menu and you can enjoy two lunch courses plus a quality vino at a superb 11.50 or three courses plus wine for a staggering 14. Then, after 6.30pm the price only goes up to 15 and 17.50 for two or three courses plus wine, respectively.
At these prices you'd struggle to get something so filling at your local Subway and certainly nowhere near as subtle, lovingly prepared or mouthwatering.
Naturally the selection is limited, in this case to about three dishes per course, but they're all pretty eyecatching, albeit simple.
I went for the potted hot smoked salmon with horseradish cream for my starter while my dining partner went for the sweetcorn chowder. Both were very basic but sumptuous.
And it was the same story with the mains. I had the pan fried trout fillets with prawn potatoes – absolutely celestial, while my dining partner had the satisfyingly inventive apple and thyme risotto. It was all finished off with a modest but beautiful crme brule.
All the courses are pretty light (and by light I don't mean small, though they aren't the biggest portions) it's low on stodge and high on taste. Extra points should also be awarded for having some delectable vegetarian options too.
Service was great, we were in and out in just over an hour and the staff were all very punctual and friendly.
Best of all Brasserie Blanc is a delightful place to eat since it's in an old waterside warehouse and boasts slightly vaulted ceilings and lovely bare brick walls accentuated by soft lighting.
The final bill was an amazing 28, which included a tip. Imagine you told someone you'd just had a three course meal in a Raymond Blanc restaurant for that price – they wouldn't believe you, or they'd at least expect the food to be of a lower quality. But the food is superb, be in no doubt.
The lunch deal runs on weekdays from noon to 2.45pm and from 5.30-6.30pm, so if you fancy a spot of early dinner it's also a viable option. Plus it's even available from noon to 6.30pm on Saturdays and Sundays – the perfect shopping/lazy afternoon grazing stop.
Of course there's the conventional menu, which in itself is pretty reasonably priced with some wonderful options, but at these prices why would you choose anything but the 'dine with wine' selection?
