Bar Review: The Maven, Call Lane, Leeds
Who?
The clientele is a melting pot of city centre dwellers, aged around 20 to 35.
You’re bound to see a reclaimed vintage waistcoat and a set of Winklepickers on a typical Saturday night but it’s not all that select. The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, meaning you’re not uncomfortable whether you fit the cool criteria or not.
What?
The Maven specialises in cocktails galore. An impressively complex list of mixes served in a mixture of odd-shaped and characterful glasses is the main attraction. But if you’re not keen on that, The Maven has a decent wine list, bottled beers only and even cheese or meat boards if you’re feeling fashionably peckish.
Why?
It’s relaxed, simple and stylish. Its almost secretive entrance gives you an odd sense of exclusivity considering its proximity to Call Lane’s main cluster of bars . The Maven’s long leather banquette, aged wooden and quite minimalist decor and suavely dressed staff make you feel right at home. It’s as you’d imagine a cocktail bar should be, with an added serving of chilled out indie music and obscure RnB. It’s a nice place to be in a great location and it’s full of character and genuinely skilled, friendly bar tenders, who can’t do enough for you.
Where?
At the top of the city centre’s bar capital, Call Lane, this flat cap and braces-clad bar is a place you have to know about to find as it has no notable signage outside. Situated opposite the likes of Milo and Wire, The Maven is hidden away up some quite disconcerting and often unmanned stairs before you actually reach its mysterious double-doors.
When?
The Maven is open seven days a week, from 5pm to 2am from Sunday to Thursday and 5pm to 4am on Friday and Saturday.
How much?
Cocktails-wise we plumped for a Caribbean-inspired rum and fruit Reggae Punch and a thick gin-based citrus Clover Leaf, along with a bottle of Modelo beer and a glass of rosé wine, setting us back a not too shabby £21.70.
