PREVIEW: Leeds Music Week
Manchester has In The City, Liverpool has Sound City, Brighton has the Great Escape.
Now Leeds is set to follow suit with its very own music industry gathering.
Brainchild of Mickey Thompson, PR of N3M Northern Music, a management and promotions company based at Joseph's Well, Leeds Music Week intends to celebrate the city's diverse music-making talent.
"The idea is basically stolen from Liverpool Sound City, Manchester's In The City and Brighton's Great Escape," Mickey explained. "Leeds has nothing to match and it's a crying shame. The aim is to make London aware of music in the North."
As well as a series of showcase gigs, the week – which will run from August 21 to 27 – also includes a fundraiser for a statue of former Leeds United manager Don Revie, the launch of N3M's new digital record label, a charity night organised by not-for-profit organisation Cloth Cat Studios and a 'speed-dating' event for musicians to chat about the best business model to raise their band's profile.
The week will culminate in a question and answer session where musicians will be able to quiz members of the Music Managers Forum, the Performing Rights Society and other industry insiders.
Mickey hopes the event will become permanent fixture in the Leeds music calendar, involving other promoters and venues. "It's the first one to get the scenesters involved at another level," he said.
"I hope it will become an annual music event for the city of Leeds and will assist Leeds's unsigned talent. The music industry has changed so much. There's no reason why musicians can't do so much themselves."
Thirty-five bands are due to take part in the week. Mickey hopes more big names will be added to the bill in the forthcoming weeks. All shows will take place at Joseph's Well.
