Music Interview: Enter Shikari

After recently returning from a tour in the US, Enter Shikari are now back in the UK gearing up to launch their third Album, A Flash Flood Of Colour. I managed to interrupt their practice session and had a quick catch up with bass player Chris Batten.

So, when did you guys find time to record the new album, A Flash Flood Of Colour?

We took the first couple of months of the year off to do the writing, and then we went to record in Thailand in May and had that part polished off for June, bearing in mind we had to get to the States for the Warped Tour.

Have you made any changes with recording the new album?

I guess we would say it’s more extreme in every way, we really haven’t held back in any way with this album. For the first time we actually gave ourselves enough time to write and record it, so we weren’t really rushed.

We had all the songs ready to go before we even went into the studio, so when we did get there, we could really focus on experimenting with sound, tones, and a lot of instrumentation.

I think the production is the best we have to offer on this album, for example, even though we have heavier stuff, it’s more melodic. It really is quite diverse across the board and there’s something in there for every one.

Where did the album name A Flash Flood Of Colour come from?

It’s lyrics from a song on that album called Warm Smiles Do Not Make You Welcome Here, we just felt that the phrase summed up the album. There’s method behind the madness.

Who are your main influences for the new album?

It’s hard to pick even a couple, really, you see we grew up just outside of London, and there is such a variety of music going on in London; dance music influenced us as soon as we were old enough to get in to clubs. Production-wise, I would say that there are a couple of guys from Holland called Noisia who are an electronica act, and their production is miles ahead of the game. As well, we always liked The Prodigy.

You’re coming to Leeds in a week’s time – are you looking forward to it?

These are our album launch shows, so anyone who pre-ordered A Flash Flood Of Colour got a ticket to come to these shows. They’re only small shows, and the Cockpit has always been good to us, and it seems like the perfect kind of show to be doing in Leeds – we’re really looking forward to it.

January 18, The Cockpit, Swinegate, Leeds, 7pm, returns only. Tel: 0113 244 1573. www.cockpit.co.uk
