INTERVIEW: Efterklang

FIVE-PIECE Efterklang are Denmark's answer to Sigur Ros. On the opening night of fuseleeds09 they will perform their most recent album Parades with the Britten Sinfonia at the O2 Academy Leeds. Tickets for the gig are available on 0113 213 7700. The YEP spoke to bass player Rasmus Stolberg about the forthcoming show.

How did the collaboration with the Britten Sinfonia come about?

We did this Performing Parades concert in Denmark last fall with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra and Kate from the Fuse Festival was there and so was David from Britten Sinfonia – we started planning this the minute they got home almost. We wanted to play this special concert again and luckily Kate and David wanted to help us out with that! We really look forward to play with Britten Sinfonia.

Did you arrange the songs for orchestra yourselves?

The arrangements are written out by our fellow Dane Karsten Fundal and are based upon the the many instruments we arranged and recorded for the album version of Parades. Fundal is a very accomplished and interesting composer and he has added many new things to the score and it is also his achievement that this can be played out live properly. We like that guy a lot!

How different is the process of working with strings to what you're used to?

We have worked with strings in the studio and live since 2004, but to work with a full orchestra is what we always dreamed of! When we recorded Parades we tried very hard to record as many instruments together as possible. It did not go very well at all - thats one of the reasons why it it feel so powerful to play these songs out live the way we pictured it, when recording it.

Is it at all daunting?

Yes, and scary! We have two days to get 45 musicians to play 55 minutes of music perfectly – very scary!

You recently played at the South By South West festival in Texas. How did you find the experience?

It was crazy, but also very uplifting for us. A lot of people came out to see our shows and it felt like a good thing to do.

Your next release is intended to be a DVD. Tell us a little about that...

It will be a live album and concert film DVD including lots of extra material.

It was all recorded last fall when we Performed Parades with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra. We look forward to release this!

Have you had chance to work on any new songs for your next album yet?

Oh yeah! we have just toured the US for five weeks and we played eight new songs on that tour. We look forward to start recording them very soon! We hope to have a new album out in 2010.
