GIG REVIEW: The Thermals
The Thermals are the kind of band that should be more famous. This trio from Portland, USA have talent to spare and amazed a lively and expectant Leeds crowd.
Local band Sketches opened with a strong, atmospheric set. Seemingly drawing influences across the indie spectrum meant an interesting mix of songs.
Strong vocals and clever layered guitars were key to a promising performance. If they faced the front of the stage for a change, they would see that the crowd actually rather enjoyed it.
So to The Thermals and what proved to be arguably the strongest show the Brudenell has seen in years. There was no escape from powerful riffs and driving bass lines, leaving the crowd bouncing for all of an hour.
To describe them would involve a mix of early Green Day, Ash and The Subways, but The Thermals are not clich. They are refreshingly unpretentious and clearly enjoyed playing a hundred-mile-an-hour set, going through songs with barely a breath between.
It is hard to circle standout tracks because the quality was consistently impressive. I Let It Go and I Called Out Your Name are worthy of special mention but every song grabs you and drags you through the sheer power of a Thermals experience.
With energy channelled into making music to love, the Thermals send tingles down your spine. They defy anyone not to jump around and quite simply you can't help but enjoy the ride.
One to look out for, to follow and to adore. Outstanding.
