Tykes have lacked that killer instinct

Yorkshire's County Championship season has been a disappointment.
The dream team of Martyn Moxon and Darren Gough will certainly have expected a better return from 15 matches than two wins – even allowing for the adverse weather factors affecting results.

Do Yorkshire have the killer instinct needed to win match
es? On numerous occasions late-order batsmen contrived to add far too many runs, turning meagre totals into very competitive ones.

The difference can best be summed up by the Brian Close approach – when you have them down, keep them down.

Yorkshire can be satisfied with certain areas this season.

The Pro40 promotion is obviously to be applauded, though I understand this competition is to be scrapped at the end of next season. There is hope for the future in young Adam Lyth who has had a breakthrough season.

Andrew Gale has progressed but needs to push on to fulfil his potential.

Of the others, Jacques Rudolph is a class apart, Anthony McGrath is a good solid performer, Adil Rashid is similar to Gale in that he needs to fulfil his remarkable potential.

One final thought. Yorkshire and the game in general will certainly miss Darren Gough.

In his pomp, Darren was a joy to behold. His bowling skills, neverending enthusiasm and that big broad smile added fun to the game. He was a real crowd pleaser if ever I saw one.

Once at Headingley, during a particularly stubborn opposition partnership, a voice from the crowd shouted: "We need a wicket Darren!".

Goughy turned to the north-east stand and said: "Any ideas?".

Moments like that will be missed. Good luck for the future Darren.

Leeds Rhinos need to stop believing in their own hype if they expect to beat Wigan in the play-off final eliminator on Friday night and book a Grand Final Place against St Helens in October.
