NO man should have the power Gordon Brown has in any democracy. It seems he has been able to do what he liked with the wealth of the nation.
His main interest is self-preservation, even if it means leaving the country in much deeper debt.

He must know his days are numbered and some Conservatives think he is trying to leave a 'scorched earth' to make their task more difficult, should th
ey win the next election.

The Tories have got a policy to cancel all existing rules on Government borrowing, which Gordon Brown has broken anyway. They will have an independent body to keep a close watch on Government spending and debt and to prevent banks taking on too much debt – excellent. You can bet Labour will fight shy on that one!

The PM gives yet another fairy tale speech about 'fairness in society' and the Tory leads in the polls are halved. This man has a history of broken promises, so it just goes to show how gullible some voters are.

PETER JENKINSON, Bradford

THE only thing Gordon Brown did at the Labour Party Conference was to re-define the word 'fair'.

It is certainly not fair that an elderly and infirm person can be deprived of guaranteed pensions credit, attendance allowance and possibly council tax and housing benefits simply because they are hospitalised for 28 or more days.

It is certainly not fair to assume that for means-tested benefits savings can produce £1 per week for each £500 (10.4 per cent annually) and in some cases £1 for every £250 (20.8 per cent annually), especially when the Government-controlled National Savings and investment products offer less than five per cent annually, before tax, on most of their products.

Sadly the gullible in the electorate are prepared to believe a politician who, over the last 10 years, has frittered away the country's assets whilst claiming to be prudent!
