Thrown off my bike after hitting pothole

THE letter of solicitor John Wilson about Leeds City Council crying wolf over compensation claims (YEP, September 19) brought to mind an incident earlier this year, when I reported a deep hole on the road near the kerb.
Six weeks later when out cycling, a car was behind me on King Lane, ready to overtake. The pot- hole I had reported was just in front of me and I moved to the kerb to the left of the hole, but my back wheel caught the hole and threw me off. Yes, I knew it was there, and maybe should have carried on past it, but when a car is bearing down on you there is only less than a second to avoid injury or death.

Thankfully, I was only bruised and the motorist got out and asked me if I was all right and I continued to the Yorkshire Dales. I could have tried claiming damages from the council for my bike but didn't.

The pothole was filled in eight weeks after it was reported, which I think is like opening the door to insurance claims.
