THE letter headed 'What we owe Churchill' (YEP, May 5) is a comedy of errors from the outset.
The photograph above the letter, shows Churchill in the uniform of an Air Marshal. Also he is sporting pilot's wings, another misdemeanour, and though he was a great orator and bluffer he was soundly rejected by the rank and file at the ballot box at
the end of the war.
The statement that he was "First Sea Lord" was another serious mistake, he was never a sailor –- the first Lord of the Admiralty is merely a desk job.
Could we have managed without Churchill? Of course we could! The Yanks were in charge of every theatre of war and most of the weapons for war came from The USA.
The famous Churchill speech that said "we will never surrender" did not include himself, for the plans for our Government and the Royal family to leave Britain to carry on the war from Canada, was already in place, should the Germans land on our shores!
So do you think Winston or any of the Royals would risk being cannon fodder? I think not.
REGINALD KIRBY, Stanningley, Pudsey
l I think Mr Firth (Letters, April 30) has got his facts wrong about Mr Churchill. Firstly he did not start World War Two, Hitler did.
Does Mr Firth realise how near we were to being invaded after Dunkirk? If that had happened Mr Firth's reply would have been written in German.
Mr Churchill at the start of the war was a back bench MP. When an invasion was imminent, the MPs recalled Mr Churchill to lead us through the horrible times that were to come.
A very wise choice as history has proved.
