The impassioned plea of Mr Lister (Letters, July 16) for information on the possible source of the stench periodically permeating his Stourton/Hunslet neighbourhood is not very difficult to define.

If anyone in the area simply follows their nose, they will arrive at Knostrop, detritus dump for the entire population of Leeds and surrounding communities, and source of non-stop nauseous emanations that, dependant on ambient temperature and wind di
rection, are expelled far and wide to all points of the South Leeds compass. It is the reason that occupants of vehicles on the nearby M1 can be seen exchanging suspicious sideways glances with their travelling companions. Mr Lister can take comfort in that he will not be alone in his misery. Leeds Council 'planners' confidently predict that up to 25,000 jobs will be created in the adjacent Aire Valley Development Zone. It is the location for no less than three proposals to build a massive Regional Incinerator. When Junction 45 is completed next year, it will become the main prestige access to and from the M1, with a vast park and ride facility just across the road.

Yes, Mr Lister, you are correct in diagnosing sewage. And regretfully, I cannot confirm that plans exist to move the Knostrop facility to the leafy suburbs of North Leeds.
