While agreeing with Eileen O'Donnell that Father Gallanagh should have been sent to prison and that the Catholic church has been wrong to cover up such instances of abuse, we should add some balance to this issue.

Let's remember that the vast majority of Catholic priests are decent people who spend their lives helping others.

For instance the NSPCC can provide figures which show that children are most at risk from abuse in their own homes by their non-celibate family members, than they are from Catholic priests, or any other outsider.

This is a fact which the public chooses to ignore as it makes us feel uncomfortable.

People would much rather have a scapegoat to blame for all of society's ills.

Let's not stereotype a lot of decent Catholic priests. They do not deserve it.
