NEWSPAPER correspondence columns seem to abound with crass outpourings of support for the royal family. I am reminded of the political outlook Nietzsche once described as "the rebellion of all that crawls along the ground against that which is height".
For that, in a nutshell, sums up the monarchist of the 21st century: he is trying desperately to preserve a rotten and outdated ethos, an institution that denies the British people a fundamental democratic right (i.e. to choose their own head of state). Sheer insanity – since it prevents us from having greater social inclusiveness and therefore a more human set of values.

The monarchist today realises he's fighting a losing battle though: he knows he can't halt progress and the creation of open, transparent, accountable government.
