RE 'Councillor calls for progress on moving VC hero's statue' (YEP, August 25).

Many thanks to Coun Atha for answering my wake-up call.

I am sure Coun Carter will also eventually answer the call for the re-siting of the statue of Flight Sergeant Aaron, VC (from the Eastgate roundabout].

I was informed by the duty officer
of Leeds Planning Department no planning permission would be required and no application had been received.

Sadly it appears that a minority who are against the move are responsible for delaying the re-siting.

Thankfully the Wainwright Trust, who paid for the statue, have given it to the people of Leeds. Therefore if the majority of the interested people of Leeds realise time has moved on and think a mistake has been made, it is up to them to decide the outcome.

To the persons who are delaying the move, I say the statue celebrates the joy, freedom and pride of the city. Can you find it in your hearts to re-unite him with his medals on show in the new museum at Millennium Square, where young people of Flight Sergeant Aaron's age, 27, enjoy the freedom these brave men fought for – and say to them never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few? Please move the statue, it's payback time.

Jack Fisher, Vesper Gardens, Kirkstall, Leeds
