No more 'rabbit hutches' please
I often agree with the observations of your correspondent Paul Kilroy, but he was below top form with his criticism of Judith Klaus's views (letters, 29.7). In fact, Ms. Klaus's were among the few words of wisdom we've heard for a while regarding the architectural disaster currently being played out in the centre of Leeds.
Who but a property developer could imagine that Leeds needs any more half-empty blocks of rabbit hutches? Ms. Klaus correctly identified what Leeds needs - green spaces or at least open spaces to give an already overpopulated city centre room to breathe. We need to move away from the mentality that any open space is a high-rise block waiting to happen.
Maybe the enforced slack period caused by the so-called credit-crunch will give our planners time to reflect on how badly things can go wrong when greed and short-sightedness are the driving forces behind development. And anyone bemoaning the loss of an "iconic building" can take heart – after all, we still have "the Lift-Shaft".
