THE success of the police in their fight against careless driving is very encouraging ('13 drivers a day fined for using mobile phones, YEP, May 5) but the sad fact is that some people still won't give up the bad habit of driving whilst on the phone.

These selfish people think they are above the law and that it doesn't apply to them.

It's good to see that the fine was increased last year to £60 and three points on the licence, but unfortunately the message still isn't hitting home. I wonder if it's time to maybe increase the fine to, say, £500 and banned from driving for one year, maybe that might just get their attention.

I hope the police keep up their splendid work and maybe these dangerous drivers might just realise that their number is up before they kill some one.
