I WOULD like, if I may through your columns, to pay tribute to the splendid performance given in the Leeds Town Hall last Saturday by the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland.

What a pity (for whatever reason) that the Leeds audience was not there in the usual numbers to enjoy the evening.

Admittedly some of the programme choice may have been a bit sombre for some tastes, but not Bruch's Violin Concerto No.1, which was exhilarating. The performance by Jennifer Pike, the young violin soloist in this piece, was truly brilliant. The standard of playing by the orchestra for the whole evening was really superb.

To all music lovers who weren't there — you missed a treat! Altogether a truly memorable evening.

CF NEWTON, Burley-in-Wharfedale
