I was appalled and disgusted to read the account on your front page (July 19) of the number of pets being abandoned because of the current economic situation.

I am a pensioner and have a dog and if I could not afford to buy dog food I would simply share my food with my dog.

However, dog food is not that expensive – even the better quality brands and there are plenty of cheap varieties on the market.

I can appreciate the Dogs Trust's comments that taking on a dog is a big commitment and involves fees for injections etc, but that is a very different scenario from abandoning a pet.

I strongly suspect that in many instances, the increase in food prices etc simply provide an "acceptable" excuse for people who want to get rid of an inconvenient and unwanted animal – possibly an unsolicited Christmas gift.

Pets are – and should be – members of the family and does not abandon a family member when times become a little harder!

KATHLEEN SMEATON, Old Farm Garth, Leeds.
