French show way to improve roads

IF as much effort was put into road improvements in the UK as the authorities use in persecuting motorists, conditions might then be more tolerable; although as the Government's 'cash cow' such is highly improbable, too much money – extracted, used and wasted on other things – is too easily obtained from the hapless motorist.
The Leeds inner ring road was obsolete when it was laid and the outer ring road, never really completed to satisfaction, is little better.

A visit to France soon shows how much thought and work has gone into the upgrading of old roads there and the building of new, that one has to wonder why we have fallen so far behind; especially as we are told that the EU matches every pound spent on such improvements. Compared with the old North Circular and the more recent M25 in London (a shambles), the Paris periphery is an eye-opener, as also are the roads through and around other major cities there.

It is time that the motoring organisations put severe pressure on the authorities to spend more on our roads from the tremendous amount they make on every pretext they can find to further increase the costs of motoring while doing very little in return.

Finally a question: is the money made from the application of pollution charges really reducing pollution? Not so! The pollution remains and so do the charges. But where the money goes nobody knows!
