EU claims 'outlandish'

I WOULD like to respond to some of the outlandish claims about the EU by Terry Watson and Mr Robertshaw (Letters, August 22).

First of all, Mr Watson, how is the EU in any way responsible for knife and gun crime in the UK? Surely if that were the case we'd see a similar pattern across Europe, however, we don't. It is also not the EU's responsibility to determine how member
states tackle crimes such as these – this is the sole responsibility of the British government, and they can deal with it how they see fit. As for the ridiculous claims about "Treasure Island Britain" regarding asylum seekers, it is in fact Germany which has the highest number of asylum seekers in the EU, or relative to the population, it is the Netherlands. The numbers coming to Britain are anyway in sharp decline (indeed we are currently at a 14 year low in numbers of asylum seekers). And then on to Mr Robertshaw's desperate attempt to claim that the "two richest countries" in Europe (Norway and Switzerland) benefit from not being members of the EU. Yet they both have to apply EU legislation and contribute to its budget but without any say in its policies – hardly a recipe that appeals.

Richard Corbett, Labour MEP for Yorkshire and Humber
