Cycling by the rules

In reply to Olivia Charlesworth's letter (July 16), I can very much see her point about cycling by the rules of the Highway Code.
But I would like to ask Olivia, would she feel safe if she was cycling down that same road if there was a double line of cars travelling at 50-60 mph, within three feet of her shoulder.
I certainly would not. And for that reason, when I cycle, I cycle in a way that I feel the safest. Which means taking up enough of the lane so that I am clear of any drains and bumps, and any cars should need overtake in a safe way, or use the other lane.
One thing that motorists should not preach is the highway code, because very few stick to the law, never mind the highway code. The advise that the highway code gives for motorists is this "When passing motorcyclists and cyclists, give them plenty of room."
When motorists start obeying this rule, there may be no need for cyclists to make their own rules.
