May we, on behalf of the Beeston Broncos Junior Rugby League Club, reply to Coun Procter's (YEP, September 29) in relation to the Splash! campaign to keep South Leeds Sports Centre open?

1. His "vision" is completely uninformed by any contact with anyone at our club, a vibrant part of the local community, and prime users of these vital local sports facilities.

2. Beeston Broncos are not looking for crumbs of comfort – we are keen
to see the maintenance and expansion of the general sports resources currently available within our community.

3. The official volte face on the future of South Leeds Sports Centre hardly fills us with confidence in those determining its future.

4. Beeston needs investment and improvement – the consequences of neglect do not need to be spelled out. It should be unthinkable for one of our councillors to suggest that in planning for the future of Leeds more widely, our community might be "one group of people more adversely affected than others".

He has underestimated our resolve.

The Management Committee, Beeston Broncos Junior Amateur Rugby League Club

Coun Procter's letter suggested that Beeston should be one of the areas of the city that is "adversely affected", SPLASHBACK! say why us?
The sports centre was re-opened after our original SPLASH! campaign was successful and it is where whole families go to be active, the courts and gym are constantly busy, new members are arriving all the time and the local staff listen to what the community needs, whether it's ladies only swimming or children's parties.
It has been a delight to watch how the centre has become, once again, a bustling hive of activity and that is how we intend it to stay. This facility should be expanded with the addition of more changing rooms for teams like the Broncos – the existing changing facilities should be refurbished (by the way what did happen to that money set aside for the original refurbishment?), the gym should be upgraded, the pool open more hours, it should become Disability Discrimination Act compliant and areas for relaxing and community activities brought on line. In an area of the city where fighting for amenities has had to become second nature, they are still few and far between.
We at SPLASHBACK! urge everyone to once gain join forces to keep our facilities local and open and improved and if we're into adding options – as Coun Procter appears to have be regard to the Broncos changing facilities – then this is the one we will be voting for.

Sally Cieslik, SPLASHBACK!
