THE news item about the closure of Kirkstall depot in Friday's YEP failed to mention that this was the site of Leeds City Transport's 'car works' where many trams were built up to the 1950s when the system closed.

The building was then used as the central bus repair works. It became a working depot following the closure of Headingley depot in the 1990s.

Unfortunately the picture with the article actually shows the rear of Sovereign Street depot, not Kirksta
ll Road. The modern building was the former LCT Social Club, while the building behind that is the old LCT head office, which is now the Malmaison Hotel.

Gord riddance

AS the results poured in from the local elections, my delight levels rose at an alarming pace to see the great charlatan Gordon Brown squirming on television because it suddenly apparently hit him what an unpopular politician he has become.

Here was a man that sold the British gold at the very bottom price, here is the man that has converted our tax system so that you need four A-levels and a couple of PhDs to even understand it, finally getting his comeuppance.

Watching the Labour politicians attempt to explain away some of their policies and some of their downright lies was highly entertaining. I suggest now is the moment Mr Brown to depart.

Drains pain

CAN anyone remember the last time they saw, in their street, one of those tankers with a pipe, cleaning out the drains, as in the pre-privatisation days of Leeds Corporation water works?

Everywhere one goes silted up drains are the norm which, in times of heavy rain, is a major cause of flooding and when we are all paying for a service we are obviously not receiving, perhaps Yorkshire Water should consider their future.
