Leeds United were today poised to allow midfielder Ian Westlake to join League One rivals Brighton on a month's loan.
The former Ipswich Town trainee is set to leave Elland Road after failing to secure a place in Gary McAllister's plans at Leeds.

Westlake has featured just twice for United's first team this year and he has been omitted from all of the squads selected for McAllister's first five matches as Leeds boss.

McAllister warned last week that a number of his squad would be sent out to free up space for new signings from the emergency loan market.

Full-back Ben Parker joined Darlington for a month on Thursday and Leeds were finalising the paperwork this morning for 24-year-old Westlake's move to the Withdean Stadium which will run until April 5, though he will not be permitted to play when Albion visit Elland Road on March 29.

McAllister has also admitted that the club are looking for a loan opportunity for striker Leon Constantine, who has recovered from the broken arm he sustained on New Year's Day. A series of injuries have restricted Constantine to seven appearance this season, and the boss appears intent on finding other players to add to his group of strikers in the loan market.

Leeds have already made an approach for Crystal Palace forward Dougie Freedman, who is out of favour at Selhurst Park and would be allowed to leave the Championship club by manager Neil Warnock.

McAllister has not given up hope of signing Freedman, despite failing to secure him before Saturday's game at Swindon Town, and Warnock said: "I've had a chat with Dougie, and it's up to him really."

McAllister, however, has acute concerns over the condition of left-back Stephen O'Halloran, who suffered a potentially serious knee injury at the County Ground.

O'Halloran, who was signed on a month's loan from Aston Villa on Thursday, broke down during the pre-match warm-up and was sent for a scan on his knee yesterday.

Leeds were expecting to receive the results today and are hoping the defender will not be forced to return to his parent club.
