The former Cheltenham Town player has been pencilled in for an appearance against Lincoln City's second string at Elland Road, his first outing for five months.

Higgs has endured a frustrating battle with a thigh injury first sustained in September and aggravated in October, but Leeds hope that a run-out in Wednesday's totesport.com League East Division fixture will confirm his return to full fitness.

Higgs began the season as United's first choice keeper but has made only 13 appearances, his last coming against Norwich City on October 19. That failed comeback saw him leave the field after just 17 minutes.

Manager Simon Grayson said: "We're hopeful that he'll get some football in the reserves next week. We've got to be careful with him but he's pencilled in to play against Lincoln on Wednesday night. If everything goes to plan in training over the next few days then that will happen."

Higgs has made repeated trips to specialists in recent months in an attempt to cure a strain which United believe is related to an old injury.
