Leeds United manager Simon Grayson is confident that Luciano Becchio will rediscover his most potent form after the striker broke his goal drought on Wednesday night.

Becchio found the net in Leeds' FA Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road, his sixth strike of the season but his first in nine games.

The Argentinian striker came within one effort of scoring 20 goals last term – his maiden year in English football after joining Leeds from Spanish club Merida UD – but his contribution has been modest since August and he was hindered by ankle ligament damage which sidelined him throughout October and November.

Grayson was encouraged by Becchio's display against Colchester United last weekend and also saw a rise in the forward's sharpness in training, leading him to predict that the 26-year-old would end his run of matches without a goal against Spurs.

Becchio remains a crucial member of Grayson's squad having made a major impact in his 18 months at Elland Road and the United boss is expecting a strong performance from the striker during the second half of United's League One term.

Grayson said: "I said to him before the game against Spurs that it could be his night.

"I sensed in the couple of days after the Colchester game that he was really back on his game with the finishing we'd been doing in training and his first half performance against Spurs was outstanding.

"It was more like the Luciano we saw regularly last year. He's had injuries this season which have restricted him but he was a battering ram on Wednesday.

"Most of our good things were coming from him.

"I'm delighted for him to get the goal and hopefully it will be like buses – now he's got one, they'll come along frequently."

Jermaine Beckford is the only player in Grayson's squad to have scored more than 10 times and he has consistently countered the lack of goals from other areas of United's team this season.

His brace in United's 2-0 win over Colchester took his tally for the season to 24, 10 short of his total at the end of the 2008-09 campaign.
Grayson, however, improved the attacking options available to him by signing Gary McSheffrey on loan from Birmingham City last week, United's most impressive deal of the January transfer window.

McSheffrey joined Leeds until the end of the season and there is scope for the deal to become permanent with the 27-year-old out of contract at St Andrews' this summer.
