Dennis Wise is quitting Leeds United to become director of football at Newcastle United after the clubs agreed compensation for the 41-year-old.
Wise's 15-month reign as Elland Road manager will officially end tomorrow after he accepted the chance to join Kevin Keegan's management team at St James' Park.

The former Chelsea midfielder has spent today preparing Leeds' squad for tomorrow's clash with Southend United, but he departure will be confirmed before the League One game and Wise will not be in the away dug-out at Roots Hall.

Newcastle have offered Wise a general role at St James' Park which will give him control of much of the Premiership club's operations. He is expected to be involved with player recruitment and youth development, but he will have no influence over the day-to-day running of Keegan's first team.

His departure from Leeds will bring to an end an eventful tenure which began in October 2006.

Wise was named by United chairman Ken Bates as the permanent replacement for Kevin Blackwell following the unsuccessful reign of John Carver as caretaker manager.

Leeds were relegated from the Championship last summer at the end of Wise's first season, but the club are fighting for promotion from League One this term despite starting the campaign with a 15-point penalty.

Given Gus Poyet's success with Spurs and Leeds decline since his departure it would be easy to conclude that Dennis Wise is not the genius we thought as the season commenced. Maybe him leaving will give us a chance to bring is someone who can get our promotion challenge back on track.

If he goes , I'd like to see David O'Leary back. He should never have been sacked. He brought us good European football.

I don't want to see another lower league manager here.

I was just looking at the monthly league tables last night, and we came top in August, September and October. In November we came tenth, December we came fourth, January we are currently 8th.

There is something to sort out, and one thing that needs to be sorted out very fast is Dave Basset preaching that we should not expect too much. Does he mean that we should not expect to come higher than 10th, 4th then 8th in the third division ?

Ken Bates is as wiley as they come. Who else could secure a no doubt very lucrative compensation package for a manager who realistically, was running out of ideas, running out of time and running out of Godfatherly favours.

Bates of course is no more palatable to Leeds fans than was Wise, but Gee-Whiz you've got to admire him.

And so who next. I think Mr B will be looking for someone in the same mould. An informed straight talker yes but more importantly someone who understands and will never forget who is really in charge. That of course, is the guy with the grey beard! Essentially it will be someone who he can get cheap and if the opportunity presents itself, sell dear!
