IT'S very good news indeed that Jonathan Douglas is about ready for first-team action again.
It's great to get an experienced player like him back, because we've badly missed him.

It's becoming a battle now and you need your experienced pros, such as Jonathan, who know what is needed on the pitch.

Fortunately, the injury isn't as bad as we first thought. It originally looked as though he might have been out for the rest of this season. But he's done well and made a good recovery.

In my opinion, he's a little bit better than this level.

There's obviously a need to take a softly-softly approach with him as he's been out for a while, but he played 90 minutes for the reserves the other night and I think he's the type of guy who wants to play.

I think if Gary McAllister asks him how he feels, he'll want to be out there, showing his leadership qualities.

And at the end of the day, in all fairness, it's getting a little bit late in the season for a softly-softly approach.

To a degree, we have made life a bit difficult for ourselves because we had a golden chance with the games against Crewe, Cheltenham and Port Vale to get well into a play-off position.

But, unfortunately, out of the nine points available we took just two.

Now we've got the teams up there with us – such as Walsall, Brighton and Leyton Orient – to play and we've got to beat them. But the prize is still there for us.

If you beat the teams around you, you also gain three on them.

It's the serious stuff now.

Tomorrow's opponents Walsall are a useful side. They're not world beaters, but they are well-organised and they compete very well and we'll need battlers out there.

They are a strong side who will go for the 90 minutes and we're going to have to match them every inch of the way to get something.

They've been in the doldrums for a while, but I was impressed by their attitude, team work and effort in the game down there.

For me, the Leeds United fans will be vital for us during the run-in.

It's a bit of a funny situation with the crowd. Obviously, they are a bit disappointed because it had looked like the season was going so well not so long back.

They are little bit disillusioned with what has happened and the changes we have had to make, which were through no fault of our own. We couldn't do anything about Gus and Dennis leaving and it's been a shock for the fans, not just the players.

We do need the crowd to get behind us now though. With nine games to go, they are worth a goal to us when they are in full flow and backing the boys.

Rather than showing the disappointment they've shown in some of the home games recently, they've got to get behind us.

If the opposition feels the crowd are a bit subdued, it lifts them. If you are an away team and you hear the opposition crowd getting on to their team, you think: 'Whoa, good! We've got them'.

But if they are right behind their side and cheering them on, it worries the opposition and they think: 'Crikey, listen to that lot'.
